Sunday 17/6/07

  • Okay, we're off 'n running in the 2007 NSW State Titles.
  • Launching Pad - the carpark at Bonnie Hills Surf Club.
  • Bit of a dull & damp start to this year's event.
  • Setting up at around 6am in a light drizzle.
  • Quite a few decent overhead sets greeted the Open 9-footers.
  • The day shifted between sunshine, drizzle and rain.
  • 27-Heats surfed today - Open 9-foot, Over-50, Over-45, Over-55, Over-60 & 8-Foot.
  • The wind was giving the tents a bit of a buffeting.
  • The local free-surfers stayed out of the contest area, which was greatly appreciated.
  • Strong sou'wester started blowing around 10am.
  • Rain set in fairly drastically around 11am.
  • By the time the 8-footers had hit the water for the last 4 heats of the day, the conditions were starting to chop, but still had a decent size for the boys to perform in.
  • One broken board and one injury sustained. Injury was to Peter Japp in the 8-foot heat. Appears as though he may have torn his cruciat (not sure if that's how you spell it) ligament. Off to hospital, then off home was the diagnosis.

Monday 18/6/07

  • Day Two started off at the same spot as yesterday.
  • Tent City set up in overcast, but rain-free conditions.
  • A tad smaller than the previous day, but still with some good overhead walls.
  • 24-Heats today - 9-Foot, Over-50, Over-45, Over-55, Over-60, Over-35 Men.
  • Day remained fine with the occasional sunny spell until around 12.30pm when the sun very quickly disappeared behind a large cloud bank.
  • Swell remained consistent throughout the day.
  • A few big scores in some of the heats.
  • Everyone's keeping an eye on the weather map - major Low Pressure System supposed to be moving through in the next day or so.

Tuesday 19/6/07

Our very own Princess Fiona - Princess by day, Ogre by night
  • Another day - another wounded surfer.
    • This time a competitor having a free-surf prior to his heat.
    • Injury = rotator cuff for about the 4th time.
    • Off to hospital
    • Out of the comp.
  • On a far brighter note, we're into Day Three.
  • Same Bat-Time, Same Bat Channel.
  • Wind was up a bit today, though the sun was out.
  • Wind was getting stronger as the day went on.
  • Conditions slightly smaller, with the wind nearly directly off-shore.
  • Everyone has been keeping an eye on the weather maps as one Low Pressure area is apparently closing in on an already formed Low of the coast.
  • 25-Heats - Over-40, 9-Foot, Over-50, Over-45, Over-55, Over-60, Over-35.

Wednesday 20/6/07

  • Put on hold for an hour due to small conditions.
  • Got underway at 8am in a strong off-shore wind and a small 1-2 foot swell
  • 24-Heats - 9-Foot, Women, Over-50, Over-45, Over-55, Over-35, Junior Boys, 8-Foot.
  • The swell was on the increase as the day went on - but the wind was too.
  • By 10.30am the swell had jumped up to 3-4 foot on the sets, but still with some manageable walls to work with.
  • By midday, the contest had moved from in front of the judge's tower down to the point, which was the only place holding a half-decent wall to work on.
  • Junior Men took to the water near the end of the day, and headed into some screaming over-head peaks.
  • You know you're on a good thing when you have to throw away a 9.0 (out of 10) ride.

Thursday 21/6/07

  • Contest put on hold again this morning due to dangerous conditions.
  • Junior Girls were due out first, but it was decided to hold their heats for a while.
  • The last thing the organisers wanted was for one of the young girls to get into trouble in a well overhead beach break.
  • Over-35 & Over-40 went out first up, with some competitors taking over 10-minutes just to paddle out.
  • The contest was put on hold again after the Over-40's, while a decision was made about where / when to send the Junior Girls out.
  • After consultation with the competitors / guardians, the decision was made to run the heats at either the Point or in the re-forms a bit closer to shore.
  • Water Security in the form of two of the pro-surfers went out with them, but fortunately were not required.
  • A Heat of the Women's Open produced the comps first perfect score (5 x 10's).
  • Heats today - Junior Girls, Over-50, Over-35 Men, Over-40, Over-35 Women, Junior Boys, Women's Open.
  • Wave size remained in the 2-4 foot range, with a few 6-8 foot faces sneaking through to really get the blood flowing.
  • Just a bit of a footnote (and personal observation by this writer) - there were some absolute moron shortboarders out in the line-up today.
    • One was so brave that he took off behind one of the GIRLS and pushed her in the back - good on ya mate.
    • Be able to skite at the pub about that one!

Friday 22/6/07

  • 7am start with a clean 2-3 foot face and a light off-shore breeze.
  • Low cloud out on the horizon, but blue above it.
  • Heats today - Over-40, Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Cadets, Over-50, Over-35, Open Womens, Over-35 Womens.
  • Day started out on the Point with the usual couple of local shortboarders trying to make life tough for the competitors.
  • Wind changed direction early afternoon, but really couldn't make up it's mind all day.
  • Surface conditions began to get a bit bumpy, and the swell out on the Point was decreasing in size.
  • Finished the day on a 2-4 foot bumpy beach break.

Saturday 23/6/07

  • Final Day and FINALS DAY.
  • 7am start for the last of the Rep Semis before moving into the Finals.
  • A nice 3-4 foot face with an off-shore breeze started the day off on a great note.
  • The local shortboarders were far more cooperative today, thanks in part to one of the local surf school operators who had had a few words to them earlier. Pity it has to come to that though, eh!
  • The Men's Open 9' Final was last event on the calendar.
    • Surfed in overcast conditions, but still with a fairly smooth face to weave their magic on.
  • The Presentation took place at one of the major sponsors - The Bonny Hills Beach Hotel.
