ASIAN PARADISE

Filmed By: Scott Dittrich

Year of Production: 1992

Duration: 90 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 7

Available Through: Hoole McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

When you start to watch this vid you begin to wonder whether they got the title wrong or whether your geography teacher knew what he was talking about when he said that Hawaii was part of the Americas. The first 25 minutes is taken up with the various breaks around the Hawaiian Islands.

It's only after that first 25 minutes that you realise that this was in fact a mini-flick prior to the main feature.

AUSTRALIAN SURFING LIFE - THE VIDEO - #1

Filmed By: Chris Bystrom

Duration: 45 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 7

Available Through: Hoole McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

This is a little like the Sarge’s Surfing Scrapbook videos with one distinct difference. It is narrated by H. G. Nelson, and as the slick says, “Here’s what you get”. Contests can be fun - showing rare good wave contests in places like Kirra, Nias and Reunion Island. Tour through South America. World Amateur Titles in Rio De Janeiro. And of course, there’s always a segment on Hawaii. Not a bad flick. H.G’s commentary is first class.

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 WAVES

Filmed By: Chris Bystrom

Year Of Production: 1989

Duration: 80 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 4

Available Through: Hoole McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

Starting with the obligatory Hawaii, there is just too much time spent dwelling on contest surfing. Sixty of the 80 minutes is taken up with a variety of contests from all around the place. The “free surfing” that is in the flick isn’t too bad though. This manages to drag an otherwise very average movie to a mediocre movie. If it’s in the weekly section at your video shop, or if a mate’s got a copy, check it out.

BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES

Filmed By: Sonny Miller

Duration: 50 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Local surf shop

Filmed in the wilds of the Pacific & Indian Oceans, Australia, Hawaii, USA and remote tropical islands, this is a full-on attack from a bunch of very hot young surfers.

The "M" rating comes from a bit of bad language. Nothing worse than what you hear at the beach every day.

BILLABONG AAAAA PRO

Filmed By: Billabong

Year of Production: 1991

Duration: 60 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 6

Available Through: Local surf shop

This is a promo film for the Sunset Contest which was the last in the Triple Crown, and with $50000 up for grabs for first place, every surfer was going to be putting it on the line. Not too bad.

FACTORY SECONDS

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Local surf shop

This is one of those small budget movies that features loud music, no commentary and insane wave riding action.

Hot waves in hot locations such as Reunion, Kirra, Hawaii, France and so on. Good little flick.

FOCUS

Home video style of another independant movie maker. This one features a lot of the top name riders in some great free surfing sessions around the planet.

Good sound track as well.

Fairly average, but a typical promo flick.

INDO ILLUSIONS

Filmed By: Wet Flicks

Duration: 42 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 9

Available Through: Hoole / McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

The hottest and some of the biggest waves make this a great flick. You have to see places like Uluwatu to believe the perfection some of these guys get into.

The movie takes you to all the spots that the current crop of surfers know about.

Some of the waves in this are unbelievable.

MAD WAX

Filmed By: Various Photographers

Year of Production: Mid-80's

Duration: 40 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Local surf shop

Made as a Quiksilver Promo film, the pretext of this little flick is that a surfer (Ross Clarke-Jones) finds the formula for Magic Wax (Mad Wax) and when he rubs it on his board and makes a wish, he is immediately transported to some top spot where he can surf his brains out.

Enter the villain (Gary Elkerton) who tries to steal his secret. And so the story goes on...

There are some good performances (in the water) by Tom Carrol, Bryce Ellis, Aaron Napoleon, Marvin Foster and the other "players".

Filmed in Australia, Hawaii and Tahiti.

The shots at Summercloud on New South Wales' South Coast are great.

The music is supplied by Gangajang.

NO EXIT

Filmed By: Chris Klopf

Heaps of loud music set to some great surf. Filmed in North Shore, Australia, Bali, and some secret spots, this is just a full-on surf junkies dream.

OCEANS IN MOTION

Year of Production: 1994

Duration: 52 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Hoole / McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

See the big names ripping around the globe accompanied by some great backing music.

360 airs and tail slides. Insane barrells at Kirra, Bells, Pipeline, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and the Canary Islands.

It's pretty much a promo film for Headworx but it features some great surfing.

ONE MORE WAVE

Filmed By: Town & Country

Duration: 25 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 7½

Available Through: Hoole / McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

This is a real little quickie. See big waves, lots of air and perfect tubes. All in the name of promoting Town & Country.

Good backing track.

PERFORMERS II

Filmed By: Quiksilver

Year of Production:

Duration: 40 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 6

Available Through: Hoole / McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

This promotional video shows a bunch of the best performing on some pretty damn good waves.

Like a lot of promo flicks, it seems to lack some substance.

Sound track is good though.

RAW POWER

Filmed By: Chris Klopf

Duration: 60 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Local surf shop

Lots of loud music and filmed all over the world, including Australia, California, French Polynesia and Indonesia.

No commentary, just full-on surfing.

SHOCK WAVES

Filmed By: Rob Condon

Year of Production: 1987

Duration: 78 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 7½

Available Through: Local surf shop

Featuring a mixture of current footage and some old stuff, this is a fairly good flick.

There is a big use of a jet ski to get some of the shots, and that certainly gives a different perspective on the whole thing.

Music isn't too bad, though sometimes a bit inappropriate.

SURF HITS

Filmed By: Jack McCoy/Dick Hoole

Year of Production:

Duration: 60 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 9

Available Through: Hoole / McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

Surf Hits is a surfing and music video. No talking, just great surfing set to great music.

See spectacular water photography in pristine jungle and tropical settings.

Gerry Lopez and Peter McCabe pioneer a primitve Java surf camp called Gradjagan (not primitive any more!!)

Ticket To Ride features waves and exotic locations from all over the world, as well as the contemporary spots like Pipeline.

The Polynesian footage is without peer in this video though.

TRASH

Filmed By: Peter Kirkhouse

Year of Production:

Duration: 30 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Local surf shop

Lots of loud music and a bunch of waves at unknown locations around the place. There are a few special effects thrown in for good measure, and no annoying commentary.

UNLEASHED

Year of Production: 1995

Duration: 50 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Local surf shop

This is an all Aussie effort and profiles some of Australia's best young surfers.

The music will suit you grommets down to the ground.

The wave action is pretty frantic as well.

WAVE OF THE FUTURE

Filmed By: Chris Bystrom

Duration: 85 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 8

Available Through: Hoole / McCoy Productions at Byron Bay

A majority of this video is spent in either Bali or Hawaii. Bali was still a place of discovery, and Hawaii, well, you can't have a surf video without the obligatory Sunset or Pipeline, now can you?

WAVE WARRIORS III

Filmed By: Dan Merkel

This video highlights the hottest surf action in the world's most powerful waves.

CAN'T STEP TWICE (ON THE SAME PIECE OF OCEAN)

Filmed By: Alby Falzon

Year of Production: 1992

Duration: 35 minutes

Rating (out of 10): 4

Available Through: ??

Subtitled "A Surfing Odyssey", this is an unusual little piece of video footage. The title is very philosophical (Can't Step Twice On The Same Piece Of Water), but there seems to be very little in the way of surfing and far too much time spent on boobs, loin cloths, demonic balinese dancers and experimental photography.

I only paid about 4 bucks for it at a second-hand store, so it was okay at that price.
