2009 SNOWY WINTER SURFING FESTIVAL
Day One
- Was looking like a fairly tragic start to the 22nd Annual
C J "Snowy" McAlister Winter Surfing Festival.
- No, don't get concerned, no one died.
- It was what appeared to be the total lack of swell during
the walk from South Steyne to Tent City.
- Fortunately there were still some nice clean 2 - 3 foot
peaks to be had
- The free surfers had to be herded out of nthe area at
various times, which is always a bit of apain.
- As with last year's vent, the SUPs got up 'n running with
a mass of swirling blades and huge slabs of fibreglass flying in all directions.
Day Two
- Amazing what a difference 24 hours can make.
- Yesterdays horizon was alive with clear skies and a rising
sun.
- Today's horizon was a mass of grey cloud with a sun struggling
to get through.
- The swell was still around though, and still in the 2
- 3 foot mark.
- Once the sun broke through, the day turned on beautiful
weather.
- Today was the Semi-Finals, and with it came some closer
scrutinee of competitor behaviour with regard to interference calls.
- On Day One competitors were pretty-much given the benefit
of the doubt, unless an Interference was deemed blatant, but Day Two was far
tougher.
- This did result in a total of 4 interference calls being
made throughout the day.
- Towards the end of the day, the weather turned sour, resulting
in the Judge's Tower nearly being blown over by a strong off-shore wind.
- The swell stayed pretty constant throughout the entire
day.
Day Three
- Beautiful start to the Finals Day.
- Waves started off VERY small, but soon built up to a nice
size and shape.
- Wind was up for most of the day, but stayed off-shore
the whole time.
- No infringements today
- As with last year, Global Surf Industries gave away a
huge number of boards to various competitors.
