2007 SOUTHSIDE SPRING CLASSIC

This is the Classic's 22nd year and has grown in support from both the competitors and sponsors. It is run in conjunction with the Spring Fair.

The weather again this year was pretty average. First sprinkling, then heavy showers, then strong on-shore winds, then sunshine, then back to cold windy weather. (Was this event being held in Mekbourne??).

The unique event at the Classic once again was the Weight-For-Age (WFA). This is worked out on a rather complex sliding scale, taking into consideration the surfer's age, weight, board length and experience. All these factors are "weighted" and each surfer is then given a handicap figure. This figure is then multiplied by the surfer's total wave scores. The end results basically means that a very inexperienced surfer who weighs a certain amount and rides a certain length of board could well beat one of the "A-Grade" surfers because his/her "weighting" is not as good as the less experienced surfer.

Anyway, back to the day. The surf started out with some fairly clean head-high sets, but soon deteriorated into choppy, wind-blown lumps.

There were still some pretty impressive scores of up around 8.0 - 9.0 in some heats.

The Finals were all contested in some very ugly conditions.

By the closing date for the contest, all divisions were virtually full, with some even having a few reserves.

As previous years, the contest was really well supported by competitors, sponsors and spectators.
